Only “13% of workers are engaged in their work,” says Sarah Brennan, former founder and principle analyst at Accelir. “Why?” HR professionals regularly ask. One often-overlooked reason is a bad candidate experience, says Sarah, who believes the candidate experience is just one piece of a larger talent experience. She also notes that, “organizations are spending $1 billion on turnover costs.” That’s why positive candidate experiences and honest employer brands are essential to organizations, and why non-HR senior executives should care about the candidate experience.

Listen now to the #PeopleFirstPodcast – Episode 5: Improving the Candidate Experience.

With today’s employer market really in the hands of job candidates, it’s important for organizations to realize that “40% of applicants drop out of a process of applying for a job because they dislike a company’s candidacy process,” says Martin Hartshorne, Ultimate Software’s vice president of products. That’s why organizations everywhere work to “always relentlessly improve the candidate experience,” he says. How? Martin’s three tips:

1.      Don’t waste people’s time

2.      Provide a personalized experience

3.      Make it really easy to get all the basics covered

In this episode of the #PeopleFirstPodcast, both Martin and Sarah detail the importance technology and metrics plays in the recruiting processes. They suggest organizations must offer a a recruiting experience to make the recruiting process simple, quick, and accessible to people from all walks of life and from all over the world. Technology can also assist in measuring the candidate experience with more direct metrics like Net Promoter Score, and even more subtle measures such as turnover rates, promotions, quality or customer satisfaction, and employee satisfaction.

Learn more about the candidate experience, why HR and non-HR leaders should care, how the candidate experience impacts the business bottom line, and how recruiting solutions and other technologies can help organizations measure and improve the candidate experience—all in the latest episode.

At Ultimate Software, “People First” refers to more than just how we treat our employees—it’s also the driving force behind our award-winning human capital management solution, UltiPro®. Lead Ethnographer, Lisa Bloss, and User Experience (UX) Manager, Matt Cowley, joined moderator Sharlyn Lauby on #PeopleFirstPodcast Episode 3 to discuss how we create a “People First” software design and why it should matter to human resources.

Ultimate HCM Podcast – Creating a People First UX Design

Lisa is one of a handful of ethnographers in the HR technology space. In this episode, she shares how her “role is to look at the big picture of who our customers and potential customers are…to learn about their work, what they love about their work, what challenges them about their work, and then how UltiPro fits into that. We spend a lot of our time out at our customer sites learning about who each individual is. We talk to everybody from a front-line manager, a laborer, to the CEO of an organization,” says Lisa.

Matt details how we design new UltiPro features: we start with the research we learn from Lisa’s team, customer feedback, and industry trends; then a group of designers meets with our Products Team to determine what problems we must solve for our users and their businesses, and then how our designs allow users to solve those problems and accomplish their goals; finally, we get real-user feedback before rolling the product out to all customers. “We are really trying to advocate for the user, whoever they may be, to help them get done the thing that they need to do,” says Matt.

“As senior leaders in the HR and business community, what should human resources professionals know about developing managers into better leaders?” asks podcast moderator, Sharlyn Lauby. “HR needs to learn how to make the business case for what is needed,” says Jennifer McClure of Unbridled Talent. Rather than saying, “We really need to improve, HR needs to say, ‘This is important to our organization because … and here are the benefits we’ll see.’ Here’s the cost if we don’t and here’s the cost if we do,” she continues.

Ultimate HCM Podcast – Help Managers Become Better Leaders

Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz about high employee turnover in today’s candidate market and how organizations can reduce turnover and related costs. We realize that most people who quit jobs actually leave because they dislike their boss. In Episode 2 of Ultimate Software’s #PeopleFirstPodcast, we address what HR leaders need to do to share these concerns and solutions in order to get the tools they need to improve management and leadership development in businesses.

Joining Jennifer on this episode is Pat Pickren, Senior Director of Product Strategy for Ultimate. Both share how recent advances to human capital management can significantly improve management and leadership development by considering what Pat calls “talent drivers”—what motivates individuals to engage in their work every day. Jennifer recommends conversations about “strategic thinking” rather than “daily planning” may help employees learn more about how their role fits in with the business. She believes that employees’ understanding of business needs is essential to enhancing the organization. Pat mentions that technology like UltiPro®’s new Leadership Actions feature can suggest specific ways managers can help improve the performance of individual employees.

As a member of the HR community, we are always looking for opportunities to contribute to and improve human resources as a profession, increase HR’s business value, and elevate the workforce as a whole. To do this, we wanted to cover topics that keep HR professionals up at night — topics like business culture, compliance, candidate experience, employee engagement, and HR’s role in helping managers become better leaders. Striving for an engaging and efficient way to openly collaborate on these topics, we created the #PeopleFirstPodcast series!

Ultimate HCM Podcast – Culture Impacts Business

During this series, we provide candid access to conversations that are normally private and  exclusive between HR technology leaders and industry influencers. With the unique combination of perspectives among Ultimate Software leaders and HR social media leaders like Steve Browne, Jennifer McClure, Sarah Brennan, Robin Schooling, and Janine Truitt, the value of this podcast series is priceless. That’s why we’re opening up the series to not just our customers, but to the world. Each of Season 1’s eight episodes will launch twice a month until the HR Tech conference, run about 20 minutes, and is perfect for any commute. With that said, here’s a preview of Episode 1:

Ultimate Software's #PeopleFirstPodcast covers a variety of human capital management topics like company culture, management development, predictive analytics, compliance, change management, and more.

Ultimate Software’s #PeopleFirstPodcast covers a variety of human capital management topics like company culture, management development, predictive analytics, compliance, change management, and more.

“People are squishy,” says Steve Browne, SHRM Board Member and Executive Director of HR at LaRosa’s, Inc., on our first #PeopleFirstPodcast as he shares the “secret sauce” to creating company culture that impacts business. The restaurant industry faces lots of challenges, as it hires 16-year-olds and faces high turnover rates. However, Steve says, by recognizing people as people, looking to play off their strengths and showing individuals how their work provides value, businesses around the world can build top-quality company cultures that attract and retain the best employees.

The conversation evolves into a high-level discussion on how organizations must update their idea of succession planning to not look at how one person can replace another, but how new employees can improve each role to provide more value to their organizations. “We let the software predict top performers,” says Viv Maza, Ultimate’s Chief People Officer, and then work with managers to develop top performers over time. Both Steve and Viv mention that development must occur in both high and low performers, and in both good and bad times.

The episode concludes with Ultimate’s recent ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of our new 100,000-square-foot facility—a building that includes meditation rooms, a putting green, a game room, and more. Viv explains how the building represents Ultimate’s “People First” core principle, shows we truly focus on employees, gives them purpose to come to work, and provides the tools for success. She also describes the tears of joy that streamed down employees’ faces as she cut the red ribbon. That’s because this building is more than an office: it’s our employees’ home, and they feel part of something big. As Viv says, “A house doesn’t make a home. It’s the people we bring in.”
