national week of serviceEvery day at Ultimate Software, we’re reminded of just how fortunate we are, not only as a company, but as people. It’s part of what drives our companywide commitment to community service, and it’s why, since our founding 28 years ago, we’ve made giving a cornerstone of Ultimate’s “People First” culture.

Throughout the year, we partner with a variety of nonprofit organizations to support local, national, and global causes that help our communities. Most recently, we had the privilege of joining Rebuilding Together for our second annual National Week of Service.

Rebuilding Together works to improve the lives of low-income homeowners, including veterans and the elderly, who are in need of major home repairs, such as roofing and retrofitting for accessibility. The 30-year-old organization works with professionals and volunteers across the United States to provide fixes and complete other beautification projects, so these individuals and families can continue to live safely and comfortably in their homes.

This year’s National Week of Service was even more special, as we teamed up with members of the Miami HEAT basketball organization—part of our multi-year partnership with the three-time NBA champions. Together, we spent four consecutive days painting, landscaping, and gardening.

We started on Monday in South Florida with the HEAT (even team mascot Burnie got involved). Then, Ultimate employees in San Francisco and Santa Ana, California, and in Atlanta and Alpharetta, Georgia, continued volunteering throughout the week to make a difference for local homeowners.

In all, hundreds of employees from Ultimate, the Miami HEAT, and Rebuilding Together joined forces for a collaborative national week of service that helped change the lives of nine families forever. It makes us so proud to see the selfless acts of humanity and the great lengths that people are willing to go to care for others, most of whom they don’t even know and will probably never interact with again.

Selfless service results in amazing connections. There are signs of the meaningful difference made, and not just in the completed work or home restorations. Sometimes, it’s a simple smile. Other times, a joyful tear. And always, an intangible feeling.

At Ultimate, we know how fortunate we are to be where we are today. We are extremely grateful for all the people and circumstances that have impacted us over the years. And knowing that we have the opportunity to return the favor, by helping and serving others, provides a greater perspective on the work we do every day.

It’s not just about creating HR software that enables thousands of people to perform better at work. It’s about delivering a positive outlook, and a hopeful future, to those most in need.

Putting people first means recognizing the many ways, big and small, we can all help others around us. When we look out for one another, real change takes place.

Feeding AmericaGiving has been a core part of Ultimate Software’s “People First” culture since our founding more than 25 years ago. Life can take many unexpected twists and turns, and we at Ultimate feel extremely fortunate to be where we are today. Serving our community is not only an ongoing opportunity to do the right thing for others—we also consider it our greater purpose in life.

All this week, we’ve partnered with our customer Feeding America to help fight hunger across the country. Hundreds of Ultimate employees have volunteered at over 25 Feeding America-affiliated food banks near our offices in South Florida, Georgia, and California, as well as in several U.S. cities—from Orlando, Charlotte, and New York to Houston, Phoenix, and Los Angeles—to accommodate our many virtual employees. We also had a team of employees who served in Toronto, partnering with Daily Bread Food Bank.

Together, our people sorted more than 100,000 pounds of food and packaged nearly 75,000 meals to distribute to local families in need.

For many of us, food is an expected daily resource, with hundreds of tasty options available at a moment’s notice. We excitedly wonder, “What’s for lunch?” and joyfully share photos of our meals with friends on social media, as we prepare to indulge. Occasionally, we might even “overdo it” and throw away the leftovers without thinking twice.

Unfortunately, that’s not the case for everyone. Hunger is a real issue that still impacts one in eight Americans. Every day, millions of people across the country are forced to choose between buying food and other necessities, such as medication.

Even in the most challenging of times, it’s important to remember what you’re most grateful for, what you do have, and what more you can for others. Ultimate is proud to team with Feeding America to provide hope to thousands of families and help put an end to this epidemic.

For more information and to find out how you can help support this crucial mission in your own community, please visit www.feedingamerica.org.

gender bias in techAs a woman with a longstanding career in technology, I’ve had a front-row seat to the industry’s incredible innovations, but also to its unbalanced gender representation. This important issue has received significant media coverage in recent years, but it’s been a very real problem I encountered throughout my pre-Ultimate career. That’s one of the many reasons why, when we founded Ultimate Software more than 27 years ago, we were determined to take care of all of our people and foster a workplace based on equality, respect, and empowerment.

I’m extremely pleased to share that Ultimate was ranked the #1 Best Company for Women by Fairygodboss, a popular resource that provides women with honest answers to hard-to-ask questions and authentic insights into salary, corporate culture, benefits, and work flexibility at various companies. This recognition is particularly notable because the rankings are based entirely on anonymous reviews that female employees share with Fairygodboss. It’s an honor and a great source of pride to be recognized as a company that truly values and prioritizes the contributions of women, because that is 100% who we are as a company.

Our Women in Leadership (WIL) group is one of four companywide Communities of Interest that promote inclusivity and equality, perfectly aligning with our “People First” philosophy and culture. Open to women of all job levels, WIL hosts a variety of events throughout the year, ranging from keynote speakers and networking events to wellness retreats, book clubs, and community service projects. There’s even an online WIL community, where employees can discuss their goals, ask questions or receive feedback, and brainstorm opportunities to positively impact future women leaders at work, in schools, and in the community.

About half of our workforce is made up of women, and approximately 42% of our female employees hold leadership positions of managers or above. We truly walk the walk.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve as a leading example that encourages companies, especially in the technology space, to witness the essential role women play as leaders and innovators. We put our people – all our people – first, and the results are indisputable.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all our people who gave Fairgodboss their feedback, and to all our people everywhere who continue to contribute to Ultimate’s award-winning culture and make US a great place to work. You inspire me each and every day.

Maybe I’m biased, but I have the greatest job in the world. As Ultimate Software’s Chief People Officer, I have the daily privilege of caring for our employees, spending quality time with our teams, and ensuring our programs and companywide culture continue to serve our people.

Ask any one of my colleagues on Ultimate’s leadership team, and you’ll hear the same sentiments. We are incredibly grateful for the thoughtful notes, emails, and tweets we receive from our employees, each expressing their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for Ultimate.

But, we aren’t the ones who deserve the credit—it’s our people.

The more than 4,200 employees who work tirelessly every day to make Ultimate one of the Best Companies to Work For.

Who do whatever it takes to personally serve our customers, and who don’t quit until a question has been answered or a solution has been provided.

Who treat every coworker with the greatest respect, trust, and care, recognizing the critical role each person plays in Ultimate’s success, and appreciating the unique views and experiences every individual brings to our company.

Who believe in our “People First” mission, exemplify our core values, and protect our culture to see that everyone is supported, every day. That everyone has the resources they need to grow as professionals, and to thrive as people.

Who pay it forward by serving our 4,100-plus customers, and countless others in our local communities.

Who we never take for granted, and feel extremely proud and fortunate to call members of our Ultimate family.

For the past 28 years, no matter what challenge we’ve faced or what achievement we’ve celebrated, there’s been one constant at Ultimate: people.

We remain committed to providing the absolute best workplace for our employees—with 100%-paid healthcare premiums, unlimited PTO, and company equity.

We are 100% focused on delivering the most innovative HCM technology, and the industry’s most comprehensive support to our customers—from our portfolio of advanced AI technologies, Xander, to our new UltiPro Connect integration hub.

It’s always been, and always will be, about people. And, at Ultimate, we have the greatest people in the world.

Below is a sampling of the amazing tweets we’ve recently received from our employees. On behalf of the entire Ultimate leadership team, we Thank YOU, our people. Not just on Employee Appreciation Day, but every day.

2018 serviceThe holidays are often a time for reflection—what we’re grateful for, who we’re fortunate to have in our lives, and how we can make a greater difference in the lives of others.

At Ultimate Software, we have our annual tradition of the Angel Tree, where we partner with Kids In Distress to help bring some much-needed joy to hundreds of families. Instead of a companywide gift exchange, our employees buy toys on the children’s personal wish lists. It’s a program we love to support and look forward to participating in every year.

As you take a moment to reflect on the past 12 months, and the year ahead, consider treating every day like a holiday. Think about what you can do daily to have a positive impact on your community.

In reality, there are millions of people in need, and countless ways to help. Why limit ourselves to just one season of giving?

In 2018, I challenge all of us to make charity and community service a year-round commitment.

Ultimate Software’s #12DaysofHCM is back by popular demand! For the past two weeks, we’ve recapped some of the most talked about topics from 2017, and previewed what’s ahead for 2018. We hope you’ve enjoyed the series, and have a wonderful holiday season!

I’m extremely proud to share that, this week, Ultimate Software teamed up with the nonprofit Rebuilding Together to help change the lives of seven families across the United States. In three consecutive days of service, more than 200 employees from our offices in Atlanta, Alpharetta, Santa Ana, and Weston spent their time painting, landscaping, gardening, and completing other beautification work on homes in our local communities.

Rebuilding Together is one of the many great organizations we’ve had the privilege of partnering with for several years now. It brings together volunteers throughout communities to improve the lives of veteran, elderly, and low-income homeowners, individuals and families who need major home repairs (such as roofing and retrofitting for accessibility) but can’t afford or otherwise commission these crucial services. Rebuilding Together enlists licensed professionals to handle the main repairs, while allowing everyday volunteers to complete complementary household projects.

Adding a personal touch to the service experience, Rebuilding Together volunteers learn about the people they’re helping when they sign up to participate. Some volunteers even get to meet the homeowners in person—an opportunity that leaves a lasting impact, as we’ve heard from several of our employees over the years.

To US, that’s the true heart of community service: people taking care of people. It’s why, from day one, we’ve made giving a cornerstone of Ultimate’s company culture. So much so that we provide every employee with two paid service days each year, which they can use to volunteer or support any charitable cause of their choosing (though, for many employees, the hours of service extend far beyond these two days).

At Ultimate, we encourage our employees to always “do the right thing.” Community service is that principle in action. It’s a natural extension of our companywide core value, “People First,” which drives everything we do, from the design of our cloud HR solutions to the delivery of our personalized customer support.

When we set out 27 years ago, with just four employees, two cubicles, and one clear focus on people, we could’ve never envisioned what Ultimate would become. Today, we’re more than 4,000 employees strong, each dedicated to helping others. They’re so passionate about people, whenever an opportunity to make a difference arises—whether within our walls, in our local communities, or across the world—it’s our own people who are often first to spring into action and start the movement. They set up online fundraisers, they organize drives (and hand-deliver truckloads of supplies to those in need), they run races and complete challenging obstacle courses for charity, they cycle miles and miles to raise money for a cure. They do more than we even know, because they prefer to stay out of the spotlight.

We are very fortunate. We have the opportunity to pay it forward, to continuously help so many in our communities. It’s Ultimate’s greater purpose as a company, and it’s our greatest responsibility as a society.

We give to help others. We share to inspire others.

We put people first, and this reminds others: Together, we can all make a difference.

What inspires you? What wakes you up each morning and motivates you to face life’s challenges?

At Ultimate Software, we’re inspired by people. It’s why we started our company more than 26 years ago, when we recognized an amazing opportunity to put people first: to provide the “ultimate” HR and payroll software that would inspire people in the workplace and empower them to achieve more.

We’re humbled and honored to be named one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For six years in a row, and the #1 Best Large Workplace in Technology the past two years. We’re fortunate to be here, and we know we’re here because of people—our employees, our customers, and our communities. They continue to inspire us, to better ourselves and to always do the right thing. So we look to pay it forward and inspire others in return. We wake up every day thinking of new ways to care for our people and to make Ultimate not just a great place to work, but a second home.

Establishing an Inspiring Home Away From Home

First, we focus on fostering a supportive, family-like environment where colleagues listen to one another, feel comfortable sharing ideas and taking risks, and work together to achieve their goals as a team. This positive, productive atmosphere inspires our employees to create innovative products that help people work more efficiently and effectively. They’re also motivated to constantly do more for our customers, providing extraordinary service and personalized, proactive support.

Next, we ensure our employees have the tools, resources, and technology they need to thrive as professionals. We’ve implemented a companywide performance management program in which employees set goals, track their progress, and have ongoing conversations with team leaders rather than a quick, once-annual review. We also offer a variety of flexible opportunities for continuous learning, from on-demand online training courses to hands-on leadership development workshops, so our people can gain new skills and grow their careers. This in addition to internship programs providing real-life experience, assistance for tuition and certifications, and specialized training for those in customer-facing service roles.

Supporting Our People’s Whole Selves

We also realize the need to support our employees not only as professionals, but as people. Since 2014, we’ve formed three diverse Communities of Interest: PrideUS for our LGBTQIA community; Women in Leadership for employees at all job levels; and UltiVETS for veterans and active service members. Each hosts several networking and social events throughout the year, including organizing Ultimate’s Inter-Office Pride Days, sponsoring seminars for Girls Who Code, and hosting barbeques for veterans. These groups bring us together to share and celebrate our unique personal experiences, and everyone at Ultimate is invited to get involved in some way.

No matter how much we do for our people, though, we’re always most inspired by what they do for others. Near and dear to us are the heartfelt contributions our employees continue to make in the community. Over the past year, 93% of our employees have participated in charitable giving. They’ve utilized their company service days to volunteer at nonprofit organizations. They’ve donated to charitable causes and helped those impacted by natural disasters, terrorism, and other unexpected events. They’ve stepped up to support colleagues and families who’ve endured personal tragedies. We are genuinely moved by the unending selflessness of our people.

From day one, we set out to create more than a successful HR technology company. We wanted to build a workplace that inspires people to trust, respect, and care. A company that encourages employees to bring their best selves—their whole selves—to work each and every day. A family that always looks after its own, in good and bad times, and makes a meaningful difference by giving.

I am extremely proud to say, that’s US.

Through our employee-centric culture, HR cloud solutions, collaborative customer service, and charitable efforts in the community, we hope we inspire others to become “People First” companies, too. Because we believe that when people succeed, companies succeed.

So, what inspires you? For US, we’re inspired by people.

It’s with great pride we announce FORTUNE has named Ultimate Software one of the Best Companies to Work For in America for the fifth consecutive year, after having also ranked Ultimate the #1 Best Large Workplace in Technology.

We hold these prestigious honors close to our hearts because, from the beginning, we’ve focused 100% on people—every day, innovating and implementing new ways of putting them first.

Ultimate Software ranked #15 on FORTUNE's 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2016.

Ultimate Software ranked #15 on FORTUNE Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2016.

That effort starts with our employees, and it extends to our customers. Over the past 25 years, we’ve created and nurtured a culture of care at Ultimate. We do all in our power to care for our people and provide the best workplace. This environment empowers our employees to take care of our customers, by developing the best technology and providing the best service, so people everywhere can achieve their best.

As Ultimate’s Chief People Officer, I’m often asked what it really means to be a “Best Company.” The truth is, there’s no single answer. It’s a combination of many factors, values, and traits. But we at Ultimate do believe Best Companies are built on C.H.A.R.A.C.T.E.R.

Commitment
Best Companies are committed to their people, their customers, and their community. They equip their employees with the tools and resources necessary for success, and have programs in place that promote professional and personal growth. They consider their customers lifelong partners, remaining available to lend a helping hand at any time and going the extra step to provide proactive support. They treat philanthropy as a top priority, and focus on making a difference in the community through companywide service.

Honesty
Best Companies believe honesty’s the best policy. They have honest people at all levels, and thrive on transparency. Their executives speak openly about the company’s past and current performance, communicate short- and long-term objectives, and give insight into the future direction of business. Managers share honest expectations of and with their team members. Employees are honest with each other, exchanging thoughtful feedback and working together toward success.

Accountability
Best Companies hold themselves accountable for their actions, and for the outcomes of those actions. They recognize and admit when they’re wrong, but they don’t spend time dwelling on momentary setbacks. Instead, they go right back to working on a viable solution capable of solving the problem and preventing similar issues from occurring in the future.

Respect
Best Companies respect, accept, and value all people from all backgrounds. They respect the opinions and beliefs of others, including those different from their own. They solicit, listen to, and learn from people’s ideas, constantly asking, “How can we do even better?” They treat all people equally and know how each person’s unique talents and experiences contribute to the big picture.

Attitude
Best Companies understand attitude makes all the difference—and they always keep it positive. Positive energy is contagious. It permeates the company and helps create the kind of amazing workplace culture that fosters innovation, productivity, and overall success. The people at Best Companies are happy, and everyone knows it. They greet strangers with smiles and trade handshakes for hugs.

Courage
Best Companies have courageous people who are willing to take calculated risks, and who are eager to present new ideas rather than settling for “the way it’s always been done.” They’re composed of doers—people who are constantly developing and enacting ways to make their coworkers, their company, their customers, and themselves better. They’re not afraid to fail, because they know failure is just a brief stop on the road to success.

Trust
Best Companies trust in the ability of great people to achieve greatness. They have leaders who establish a solid foundation and set a core mission, and then trust their people to take action and bring that mission to fruition. They trust in their people to always do the right thing. Likewise, employees trust in company leadership to always do right by them, always treat them fairly, and always tell them the truth (remember: honesty’s key).

Ethics
Best Companies adopt a specific set of ethical standards that correspond with their intrinsic values. Their people are moral, they have integrity, and they all adhere to these virtues. They always uphold company values and they never compromise personal principles, especially when challenged or faced with adversity. They comply with all governmental laws and regulations, and conduct themselves with nobility.

Responsibility
Best Companies have people who won’t shy away from responsibility. They take the lead, assume ownership of projects, and see these initiatives all the way through. They’re dependable, ever-present, and can always be called upon, even long after a program’s been implemented. Because Best Companies have the best people, and the best people know their work is never truly finished.

Becoming a Best Company is a comprehensive process that requires ongoing effort and focus. It’s an evolution that won’t happen overnight. But the inherent results of being the best serve to benefit your people, your customers, and your business for years to come.
