Organic Pioneer Amy’s Kitchen Selects UltiPro to Support Expansion

Ultimate Software (Nasdaq: ULTI), a leading provider of human capital management (HCM) solutions in the cloud, announced today that Amy’s Kitchen, a family-owned, privately held company that is a pioneer in the organic foods industry, has selected the cloud-based UltiPro® solution to support future growth and better service a bilingual workforce using an HCM provider with a strong value on partnership and service.
Founded in 1987, Amy’s has created over 250 products, which are carried by natural-food stores, supermarkets, and club stores in the United States, Canada, and abroad. The company employs more than 2,000 people and operates three processing plants in California, Oregon, and Idaho, with an additional plant opening in New York this year.
Previously, Amy’s Kitchen handled its HR, payroll, and talent management with multiple solutions and processes, including a payroll service bureau, spreadsheets, and manual administration. According to Carme Lewis, total rewards and human resources technology director with Amy’s Kitchen, the technology for these systems had become outdated, operated on disparate platforms, and necessitated redundant data entry. Company leaders wanted to streamline HCM and prepare for growth with a best-in-class solution. After an extensive research process, Amy’s Kitchen selected Ultimate’s UltiPro solution as its system of record.
“We knew that we needed to adopt a comprehensive HCM, or we would have had to expand our HR team to manage a larger workforce, which would not make sense financially,” said Lewis. “With UltiPro’s comprehensive functionality, we will be more efficient and less burdened by repetitive administrative tasks and free to focus on our people. We are a high-touch organization, so we wanted a solution that would free our leaders to be more hands-on with employees and provide us with greater opportunities for engagement through a technology like UltiPro that has been designed for end-users.”
Because Amy’s Kitchen is an employee-focused organization, it was important to identify a solution available in multiple languages that would support the large numbers of bilingual employees working in the company’s three manufacturing plants. HR leaders also wanted an intuitive user experience to drive employee adoption.
“We believe that UltiPro delivers a user friendly and engaging experience,” said Lewis. “UltiPro’s person-centric design offers a consistent user experience, available in multiple languages, for our employees all over the country, which we think is important.”
Multilingual features will be more important as the company grows. Entering its 28th year as one of the nation’s leading frozen-food brands, Amy’s Kitchen plans to expand its distribution beyond health-food and grocery stores with the launch of its first vegetarian drive-thru restaurant in California this summer.
“Amy’s Kitchen is on an upward trajectory. In deciding to partner with vendors, relationship is a key factor for us,” said Lewis. “Finding a partner that values the uniqueness of our organization and will stand beside us to help us succeed is rare to find. Ultimate Software is that partner, and we are so impressed by the technology and people that back this HCM solution. We believe that we are laying a solid foundation to significantly transform our organization for an exciting future and that Amy's Kitchen can go anywhere with UltiPro.”
“We’re delighted that Amy’s Kitchen has chosen UltiPro as its HCM solution to support its business and its people as the company continues to grow,” said Greg Swick, chief sales officer at Ultimate Software. “Our goal is to provide the strongest HCM solution that delivers optimal operational efficiencies, backed by the best services team, to ensure their continued success.”
