Using HR Software to Focus on Employee Needs

Cumberland Farms, Inc. is a Massachusetts-based retailer that operates hundreds of convenience stores, gas stations, and petroleum and grocery distribution centers in the eastern U.S.

Like many companies in the retail sector, Cumberland must contend with a large, diverse, and wide-reaching employee population. Cumberland is focused on supporting its team members at every location, and using HR technology to simplify and improve the employee experience.

Prior to UltiPro, benefits management, including open enrollment, was a complicated and sometimes arduous process for the company. Benefits challenges included the mass mailing of forms, manual follow up with employees who lacked computer access, and communicating with managers and employees in approximately 600 locations.

Debra Damon, Director of HR Systems and Operations at Cumberland Farms, decided to leverage UltiPro to provide the company and its employees with an easy-to-use, configurable HCM solution that would deliver an intuitive user experience.

Under Damon’s leadership, the company achieved instant success with the launch of UltiPro Open Enrollment, quickly and easily enrolling thousands of Cumberland Farms employees. UltiPro provided employees with online, step-by-step guidance through enrollment without the need for training or having to rely on HR for assistance. In addition, the company eliminated the need to buy, print, mail, and file thousands of pieces of paper. As a result, the HR team is spending a fraction of the time on benefits compared to previous methods.

With increased time savings and reduced administration, Damon as well as the Cumberland Farms IT and Payroll teams have turned their attention to strategic company initiatives that boost engagement and make employees’ lives easier. Cumberland Farms’ successes include leveraging UltiPro to automate and send a weekly report of projected PTO to managers and team members, expanded mobile access to UltiPro so that hourly store team members without a computer can still access their pay information, and the automation of a variety of milestones related to performance evaluations that are helping management and employees unlock higher levels of organizational performance.
