The recently wrapped 2016 HR Technology Conference & Exposition brought together thousands of HCM professionals in Chicago for a four-day discussion of today’s trending topics and tomorrow’s exciting innovations across the industry.

One of the highlights of this year’s HR Tech was the second annual Hackathon, where several teams of developers had the opportunity to showcase their ingenuity and ability to address some of the most pressing challenges organizations face today in HR and business—all in just 48 hours.

As an interactive twist to the friendly competition this year, HR Tech attendees had the chance to brainstorm and supply a collective list of challenges for the teams to tackle during the Hackathon. Ultimate Software’s team selected “Systems Integration” after conversing with conference attendees who described the time-consuming process of having to switch back and forth among several systems to complete their daily tasks.

The attendees wished for a way to easily access key information and combine crucial functionality across systems to achieve optimal results with their technology. With a challenge identified, Ultimate’s Innovation Team set out to deliver a viable solution—envisioned as a sort of “Siri for HR.”

After coding nonstop against the ticking clock and functioning on little sleep, the team emerged two days later with its creation: UltiMatt, a virtual assistant that could integrate with such systems as Salesforce, Microsoft Outlook, Virgin Pulse, and—most importantly—Ultimate’s UltiPro®.

Inherently designed for putting people first and simplifying work life for professionals everywhere, UltiMatt could help sales representatives stay in contact with potential customers and track the progress of their sales quota. It could keep customer service representatives focused on resolving their high-priority inquiries. It could even aid an HR generalist in organizing a busy day or scheduling some well-earned time off with a simple voice command.

UltiMatt proved a crowd favorite among HR Tech attendees, with Ultimate’s app receiving a majority of the vote for best innovation during the Hackathon solution showcase.

Virtual assistants for personal use have quickly risen in popularity, and they represent great potential for innovation in the HCM domain. As demonstrated by Ultimate’s UltiMatt at HR Tech, there are countless tasks that artificial intelligence could assist with.

By one day adopting virtual assistants, HR professionals and business leaders can spend less time completing trivial tasks and more time connecting with real people.
